I am a registered nurse and always get told that I speak English so well. I was born in Australia and I am of Filipino background. I don’t think about my appearance until a patient or their family member points it out and they are quite amazed/baffled that someone who appears Asian “speaks so well” and could be considered a “real Australian.” The number of people I want to slap is unbelievable.

They’re probably just not used to it. In a generation or so, people will get it. Though I’m Filipino too, I’m still guiltily surprised when I see an older person (um, by older I mean older than me…late 20s+) of Chinese, Vietnamese, or Thai descent speaking fluent English. Fluent Filipinos aren’t so surprising (at least for me) since all of my cousins are my age and were born and raised in an English-speaking country.
