Microaggressions

During a discussion on music history in college:

“Like, what was Africa like at the time Mozart was alive?”
“Like, drum circles.”
“How much of Africa was even like civilized at that time?”

I was lucky, my Music History teacher also taught World Music (though he wanted that broken up into Asian Music, African Music, and Indian Music, the department didn’t let him). He spent a lot of time in class talking about how Music History classes tended to be ethnocentric, “I don’t want to call this ‘Music History’, it’s not, it’s ‘European Music History’ … as if all other cultures were somehow less civilized, and if we just gave them enough time to catch up they’d eventually sound like Bach and Mozart.”
